Stress fractures are tiny cracks in a bone, often caused by repetitive force or overuse. While they’re common in athletes, runners, and people who spend long hours on their feet, they can happen to anyone.
The tricky part? Early symptoms can be subtle—easy to brush off as “just a bit of soreness”—until the pain gets worse and recovery takes much longer. Knowing the early signs means you can get help before the injury becomes more serious.
Stress fractures often develop when the muscles in your feet and legs get too tired to absorb impact properly, passing the force directly onto the bones. Over time, this repeated stress can cause small cracks.
Common risk factors include:
Sudden increases in activity or training
High-impact sports like running, basketball, or football
Wearing worn-out or unsupportive shoes
Foot structure issues, such as flat feet or high arches
Low bone density or conditions like osteoporosis
1. Localised Pain
A sharp or aching pain in a specific spot on your foot that gets worse with activity but eases with rest.
2. Swelling
Mild swelling around the painful area, especially after exercise or long periods of standing.
3. Tenderness to Touch
If pressing on a certain part of your foot causes discomfort, it could indicate a stress fracture.
4. Gradual Onset
Unlike sudden injuries, stress fracture pain usually starts small and worsens over days or weeks.
5. Pain With Everyday Activities
Over time, even walking or standing can cause discomfort.
Catching a stress fracture early means you can start treatment quickly, reducing recovery time and preventing a complete break. Ignoring it could lead to a more serious injury that requires a longer period of rest—or even surgery.
A podiatrist can:
Carry out a detailed assessment and imaging if needed
Recommend protective footwear or orthotics to reduce stress on the bone
Provide a personalised recovery plan, including gradual return to activity
Address underlying causes, such as poor biomechanics or weak supporting muscles
If you’ve noticed persistent pain in your foot that’s focused in one spot, don’t ignore it. Book an appointment with your podiatry clinic to get it checked. The sooner you take action, the faster you can get back to pain-free movement.
